Alpaca Gestation Calculator & Chart
Alpacas carry a cria for about 345 days (eleven and a half months), with most births between 335 and 355 days. Alpacas are induced ovulators — there is no heat cycle to watch — so breeders rely on behavior testing ("spit-offs") and ultrasound to confirm pregnancy. Crias overwhelmingly arrive in daylight, most often mid-morning.

Common questions
How long is an alpaca pregnant?
About 345 days — eleven and a half months — with a normal range of roughly 335 to 355 days. Some females run past 360 days without trouble.
What is a spit-off test?
A behavior test: a pregnant female will typically spit at and refuse an approaching male. Breeders test around 2 weeks after breeding and re-test periodically; ultrasound at 45–60 days gives certainty.
Why do alpacas give birth in the morning?
It is believed to be inherited from the Andes, where a cria born early in the day has time to dry and nurse before cold nights. Most crias arrive between mid-morning and early afternoon — night births are rare and worth a vet call.
Do alpacas have a breeding season?
Not strictly — as induced ovulators they can be bred year-round, though many North American breeders time births for mild weather.
